Soil Testing
Healthy soils produce healthy plants. Many of our modern gardening practices have destroyed good soil microbes. Chemical fertilizers and pesticides cause unhealthy soil. The best way to determine soil health is to look at it under a microscope to see what kind of microbes are living in it. Our soil lab tech can give you a general assessment of the microscopic life in your soil for $20. The $100 test is more involved and provides quantitative guidelines showing how concentrated the microbes are in your soil. Call for more info 304-465-8974.
Directions for bringing your samples to HONEYSUCKLE HILL NATURE DISCOVERY CENTER:
If you would like your soil tested, CALL AHEAD TO MAKE APPOINTMENT WITH SOIL LAB TECH. Collect your soil on day of examination. Make sure you dig down to the depth of your plant roots. Tech needs a cup of soil to to perform tests. Place your sample in a zip-lock plastic bag, make sure it stays moist, not soggy. Allow some air in bag so microbes can breathe. If you have more than one sample, label bags with location information.
Field Trips
We welcome groups of all ages. Most field trips for students begin with a 20-30 minute tour of the gardens and exhibits. Break out into smaller groups with 1-2 hands on nature based activities. During the activity rotation session students usually have time to revisit favorite garden areas. Honeysuckle Hill Nature Discovery Center is a hidden gem with its STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) opportunities. Most student field trips last about 2 hours if not bringing lunch. For more info call 304-465-8974 or email us hhndc.info@gmail.com
Wreath Making Workshop
The annual Wreath-Making Workshops begin on the first Saturday after Thanksgiving. You will be guided, step-by-step, to create a lovely piece of artistic nature to beautify your home or give as a gift to the person who has everything. Volunteers harvest all the fresh evergreens from the gardens. Volunteers also make evergreen floral arrangements in repurposed containers. The arrangements are displayed for sale at local businesses. Call to reserve your space or book a private party.
